My Story
How I got here
It surprises me how long it took for me to find my passion for user experience design. It started after attending the NRF 2018 Retail's Big Show Expo in New York. Where I spent most of my time watching the lectures from the 'Innovative Lab' segment. Every single lecture was about how technology is, will and must be integrated into the retail experience because that is what the customer wants. What the customers want! Every lecture drilled home the importance of knowing who the consumer is, and how that becomes an integral part of the brand.
From there I had the opportunity to travel to a couple cities in Brazil giving presentations on how to improve customer experience. And slowly I began to realise that my university degree in Cognitive Systems was more than just an amazing challenge in multi-disciplinary thinking but actually the perfect foundation for user experience design.
The thinks I've learned to think
I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a B.A. in Cognitive Systems where I followed the Cognition and Brain stream focusing on Psychology but with a background in Philosophy, Linguistics, and Computer Science. The program taught me the principles and techniques used by intelligent systems both natural and artificial. I also studied the systems of perception, linguistics, and the design of interfaces between different forms of intelligent agents such as human-computer interfaces.
From Psychology I learned about human perception and how to conduct empirical research. From Philosophy I learned to question paradigms and think analytically. From Computer Science I learned about the logic and rules the govern intelligent agents.
And as it turns out, one of the most important tools for a UX designer is a skill I've been honing since this little 8 year old got cast as cinderella in the school play, and have since improved not only my acting but my empathy skills too!
